President’s Message

16 August 06

Greetings fellow archers and friends,

Closure of Ranges

This week sees two long-time ranges being closed for different reasons.

The Jurong Range will be temporarily closed as it was severely damaged by a heavy thunderstorm. ACS who was the tenant there has given us their quit notice and have in fact moved out of the premises as on 15 August 2006.

Coincidentally, Potong Pasir Archery Club also gave a sudden notice to us to move out of the Upper Serangoon Range as their members needed to use the range more often. I would like to thank PPAC for hosting us for so long and for the support given.

We are now in the process of looking for alternate locations that are suitable to be used as an out door range. Similarly, we are also looking for a more permanent indoor range that all archers can enjoy. If you have or know of any such locale, please give me a call at 93836113 or drop me a note on that.

National Register of Coaches

Many programs are being planned with the various agencies like SSC, MOE, etc. This is all in line with our Mass Participation Plan to increase very substantially the number of archers in Singapore. In line with this expansion many requests and demand for qualified coaches will be made. ALL our programs are planned and geared to help all clubs and registered NROC coaches benefit from the expansion. If you are a coach but not registered with the SSC, I strongly remind you to do so before the year is out as AAS and all the schools will only involve NROC registered coaches in all its future programs.

AAS National Training Scheme

Loong Tat, Harry and Daniel have gotten together and develop a very comprehensive National Training Scheme. Do look out for it on this website very shortly. This scheme has been presented to the various external organizations for comments and improvement. The feedback is overwhelmingly supportive and we are very confident you will like it too as it very concise, transparent and appropriate.

SAFRA Indoor Competition

The competition takes place this weekend and we wish all archers well and good shooting. Coaches please remember that though the 122 ring rule is not being applied to this competition, the judges will be implementing the rest of the rules as laid down by FITA. In particular, the rules involving finger tabs, strings, arrows, etc., will be strictly enforced. Do your archers right by ensuring that your archers are properly prepared, equipment wise, for it. If you need clarifications contact Don or Leong Fai Keong.

Pesta Sukan 2006

The PS 2006 shoot will be held over the weekend of 02 and 03 September 2006. The 03rd results will be used to invite archers to join the National Youth Training Squads for the various ages. More details will be made available over the next few days. So do watch out for it. Another separate trail will be held for the more senior archers doing the longer distances (70 meters and more). Again, look out for details on this web site.

Coaches preparing their archers for the PS 2006 competition please ensure FULL compliance of the rules or their scores will be invalid and they will have lost a chance at being selected. The 122 ring rule will be applied from this tournament onwards.

Coaches’ Meeting

There will be coaches’ meeting on Friday, 25 August, 2006. During this meeting, the NTS will be discussed in depth, the Selection Trials explained, the Mass Participation Program introduced and a coaches’ administration exercise carried out. All archery coaches are invited to this meeting which will be held at 7pm. Venue will be advised as I have not decided on it as yet. Coaches, believe me you will want to be there or risk being left out of events that are going to happen very fast and very soon.

Judges’ Course

Leong has put together a Judging for Beginners course for all archers who want to be certified as a National Judge. Places are limited and you are advised to register early. A course fee of $40 is being levied for this 3 session course but this fee will be refunded once you have passed the course and done your duty as a judge for 2 competitions.

Details will be published under the Judges section of the website.

FITA 122 ring and arrow gauges

We have managed to buy from FITA limited sets of bow and arrow gauges. These are the approved gauges used by the judges around the world in ensuring arrow and bow compliance. If your Club is interested in purchasing a set at $40 please drop me an email so that a set will be reserved. Each Club is eligible to buy one set only and allocation is based on a first come first sold basis with the date of the email serving as proof of order of receipt. In the meantime I will be at the SAFRA shoot this weekend and you can also get it from me there.

This exercise will be carried out once only and is being done to facilitate compliance by the clubs of the standard bows category. Clubs wishing to loan a set of the gauges may contact the club’s Secretary to arrange. A deposit of $40 is required for each set of gauges loaned out. Loan period is a week from date of collection.

Open trial 16 September 2006

An open trial selection will be held on the 16 September 2006 at Flaming Arrows Archery Club Range (300 Jalan Jurong Kechil) for Open class archers and those others who may want to have a go at it. It will be a double 70 shoot and starts punctually at 1.30 pm. Please register early with Jaffar at the FAAC Range or through president@archerysingapore.com. Fee is $10 and is non refundable once registered. Payment can be made on the day itself.

The change in date (originally planned for 17 September) is at Coach Choi’s request as she wants to start immediate training the following day.

Guess that is about it for now. Talk to you guys soon.
